Pelvic Pain in Pregnancy

Pelvic and lower back pain is common in pregnancy and is caused by stiffness or uneven movements of the pelvic joints during pregnancy. This is because of the increased laxity in the joints and muscles due to the changes in hormones during pregnancy.

Symptoms of pelvic girdle pain include:

-          Pain deep in the groin or pubic area

-          Pain aggravated by particular types of activity including climbing stairs, turning in bed or getting in and out of the car

-          Grinding or clicking in your pelvis

-          Pain referring into the lower back or thighs

Physiotherapy treatment for pelvic pain may include:

-          Specialised exercises to strengthen or relax your pelvic floor muscles

-          Hands on therapy such as mobilisations or soft tissue releases to your lower back, pelvis, stomach or hips

-          Advice and education on avoiding or modifying activities

-          Fitting of a pelvic girdle support belt if required

-          Stretching and/or strengthening program for your gluteal, core and lower back muscles
