Pelvic floor strengthening during and after pregnancy

Pelvic floor strength and stretching is incredibly beneficial for both the mother and baby in preparation for birth and postpartum. Below are some significant benefits:

-         Support for the growing baby/uterus: a strong pelvic floor provides support for the uterus, prevents strain on the ligaments and reduces the risk of bladder/bowel leaking, prolapse or other complications

-         Reduces risk of incontinence: Pregnancy leads to increased pressure on the bladder and can result in bladder or bowel leakage. Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can improve bladder and bowel control and reduce the likeliness of involuntary leakage.

-         Smoother labour and delivery: It is important for the pelvic floor muscles to relax in order to allow delivery of the baby. It is also important to have a strong pelvic floor during the pushing stage of labor. A more efficient labour process can reduce risk of medical interventions such and allows a shorter duration of labour.

-         Enhanced sexual function: strengthening of these muscles can result in increased vaginal tone, better blood floor to the pelvic region and enhanced sensations during sexual activity.

It is important to note that pelvic floor exercises should be performed correctly and under the guidance of a physiotherapist who can also provide specific recommendations tailored to your individual needs and ensure you are performing the exercises safely and effectively.
