Hip and Groin Pain

Hip and groin pain can be as a result of a trauma, overuse, muscle imbalance or underlying disease. It can also be linked with lower back, pelvic or knee problems. It is important to get an accurate diagnosis from your Smartmoves physiotherapist to ensure it is managed properly.

Common conditions of the hip and groin include:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Impingement syndrome

  • Injury of Labrum (cartilage)

  • Bursitis

  • Tendon problems

  • Sciatic nerve irritation

  • Muscle tears including hip flexors and adductors

  • Osteitis pubis

  • Sacroilliac joint dysfunction

  • Instability

  • ITB syndrome

Depending on what stage you are in, physiotherapy can help. Initially, techniques such as massage, trigger point therapy and stretching can reduce pain. It is then important to rehabilitate, with an emphasis on strength work to reduce strain on injured structures and allow a return to normal activity.
